The work of William Shakespeare could be pretty gruesome. In fact, a lot of Elizabethan theatre was more violent than the harshest of modern horror. A great example of this is Macbeth. Roman Polanski shocked with his blood and guts version of the Scottish play in 1971. Here is the first atmospheric scene with the three witches predicting the horrors that are forthcoming – complete with a noose and a hacked-off arm!
