Adrian Atkins

Spooky Isles interviews  Adrian Atkins, from WTFWT Paranormal, who is based in Cambridge but travels nation wide as a medium on paranormal investigations. He’s been an investigator since  July 2005.

What was your first Paranormal encounter?
Pengersic Castle in 1996, visiting on an open day and I entered a bedroom something trying to get out knocked me out of the way.

Do you believe in ghosts, and if so, what is a ghost?
I was a sceptic at first but now I am a firm believer. I do feel that ghosts come in different forms though. Some are humans or animals that have died and don’t know that they have died and are still carrying out their daily functions, some are trapped and are in fear of moving on and some are just happy where they are and don’t want to go anywhere.

What evidence have you personally uncovered that makes you consider ghosts are real?
I can only go by what I see and the names, dates and events I get and these are often clarified by others such as historians or curators and much of the information I get is not available on websites but held in records at the venue.

Are you skeptical of the claims others make of their findings?
There are so many out there who are willing to fake things and there are also just as many refusing to accept any evidence so I gave up judging anyone’s evidence years ago. If people want to fake things then that is their loss.

How do prepare for a ghost hunt?
I tend to wander around the building plugged into my iPod and listening to metal as it’s the best thing I can open up to, I used to do the same thing when I was a sidecar racer as it helped me get in focus.

What tips would you give for someone going on a paranormal investigation for the first time?
If you can find a small local group who are willing to take guests then this is the best way to start. They will be down to earth and won’t charge you inflated prices. If you go to a major company, you will get charged the earth and may expect something to happen and for some strange reason this often happens as well.

What is your favourite piece of paranormal investigation equipment?
Dictaphone, it can be amazing what you can pick up on one of these.

Are you psychic? Do you consider being psychic a help or a hindrance for paranormal investigations?
I can see hear and communicate with spirit and I am lucky enough to be able to see the surrounding area as they would be seeing it in their time. I feel Psychics can be a help in the right conditions just as long as you don’t accept what they tell you as gospel. You have to make your own decisions and I would hate to think that I was influencing anyone’s views while on an investigation.

What makes a great haunted location?
I like locations that haven’t been opened up to too many teams, it’s like going in blind and without any reports available on websites or knowing any previous teams that may of held and investigation there it makes the whole investigation more exciting not knowing what may be there.

If you could investigate any haunted location, where would that be?
Houses of Parliament, there must be some amazing spirits with lots to tell roaming that building.

What scares you about Ghost Hunting or Paranormal Investigations?
I don’t really feel that there is anything to be scared of, I get pushed and scratched on some investigations but I feel its all part of it.

In your opinion, what is the most haunted area in the UK or Ireland?
I seem to be doing more and more investigations in the Midlands with some amazing buildings coming up and so much activity and a lot of the buildings haven’t been on the circuit for long.

Read any good paranormal books or watched any good paranormal TV shows/movies recently?
To tell the truth, I avoid both with a vengeance.

Tell us about your favourite moment from a paranormal investigation.
I have so many but I will go with one at a museum in Essex where I saw a young girl coming towards me with her arms outstretched and she had callipers on her legs. Talking to the curator afterwards she produced a picture from the early 1900s of a group of local school children and then she pointed to the girl I had seen… what a feeling!
