Illustrated Welsh Folk Tales for Young and Old

Peter Stevenson gathers Welsh folk tales rooted in coastlines, bogs, lakes and mountains, presenting them in the lively manner of an oral storyteller. The collection includes rowdy mermaids and drowned lands in Cardigan Bay, an ancient tree with a door into the otherworld, and a wise old toad who knows everything from Borth bog.

Other stories tell of a clever girl transformed into a swan, fairy cattle beneath Llyn Barfog, a green man, an enchantress who swallows a poet and an elephant whose fate in Tregaron remains uncertain. Stevenson’s 140 colour illustrations combine detailed pictures with silhouette-style images, giving each tale a distinctive visual character while retaining its roots in Welsh storytelling tradition.
