Witchcraft in Wales

Witchcraft in Wales gathers Welsh traditions concerning witches, curses, magical practices and feared supernatural influence. Its material derives from the folklore collected by Elias Owen, whose investigations preserved stories and beliefs gathered from older inhabitants, clergy and other local informants in North Wales.

Among the traditions associated with Owen’s work are the Llanddona witches of Anglesey, whose reputation was said to inspire fear in local communities, together with accounts of curses and bewitched animals. The book offers a compact record of vernacular belief rather than a modern occult manual, preserving the stories, customs and superstitions through which Welsh communities understood illness, misfortune, protection and magical harm.
