Haunted Derbyshire

Haunted Derbyshire gathers historical and contemporary accounts of reported spirits, spectres and poltergeists from across the county. Jill Armitage includes stories associated with the Mad Monk of North Wingfield, the crying angel of Etwall and the headless ghost of Wenley Hill, alongside darker traditions linked to Derbyshire’s landscapes and communities.

The book also brings well-known local figures into its supernatural history, including Florence Nightingale and George Stephenson, the so-called Railway King. Other accounts consider why the Chesterfield Canal veered from a straight course, why horses are said to shy at crossroads, how empty theatre seats reportedly move, and why miners leave shoes in the workings.
