Highland Folk Tales

Highland Folk Tales gathers traditional stories linked to the Scottish Highlands, where legends associated with Gaels, Picts and Vikings remain connected to particular places. Bob Pegg’s collection includes accounts of fairy people in green hills, solitary ghosts, bloody battles and encounters with Britain’s last wolves, alongside tales of selkies, mermaids and the Fuath, a Scottish supernatural creature.

The settings range from Highland towns and villages to mountains, cliffs, peatland and glens. Among the stories are ‘Margaret and the Three Gifts’, involving fairy folk and a perilous escape, and ‘The Seal Killer’, a Caithness tale that moves between Duncansby Head and the sea-world of the People of the Sea. Pegg presents these traditions as a storyteller and folklorist attentive to the relationship between narrative and landscape.
