Shropshire Ghost Stories

Sally Tonge retells ghost stories from across Shropshire, bringing together local traditions, reported apparitions and tales shaped by the county’s history. Among the accounts are the Phantom Funeral of Ratlinghope, the Bagbury Bull, Bloody Jack of Shrewsbury and the White Lady of Longnor.

An introductory section examines recurring elements in Shropshire’s ghost lore, including bottled ghosts, white ladies and encounters with the Devil. It also considers whether some of the stories reflect identifiable historical events or figures, rather than existing solely as supernatural tradition. Drawings and atmospheric photographs accompany the text, adding visual context to this collection of county folklore and reported hauntings.
