Tyne and Wear Folk Tales for Children

Tyne and Wear Folk Tales for Children gathers illustrated retellings rooted in the folklore of north-east England. Its stories range from witches and saints to evil fairies, the Devil and a remarkable flying donkey, with the region’s hills, rivers and Jurassic coastline providing the setting.

Among the tales are Johnny Reeds, The Newcastle Witches, The Flying Donkey and The Evil Fairies of Stanhope. The collection also includes The Hedley and the account of Half Hanged Macdonald, presenting local traditions and legends in a lively form for younger readers. Adam Bushnell and Dave Silk provide the stories, accompanied by Nigel Clifton’s illustrations.
