North of Ireland Folk Tales for Children

Doreen McBride retells folk tales linked to the north of Ireland, bringing together stories of mermaids, pishogues, fairies, witches, wizards and ghosts. The collection moves between eerie reports, comic episodes and old legends involving Celtic warriors, haunted dolmens and bloodthirsty figures.

Among the stories are tales of Dunluce Castle’s kitchen falling into the sea, Finn McCool and the building of the Giant’s Causeway, and a spider said to have changed the course of history. McBride’s storytelling background gives these accounts a lively, irreverent tone, while the settings and characters keep the focus firmly on the folklore of Ulster.
