County Durham Folk Tales

County Durham Folk Tales gathers traditional stories from across a varied landscape, moving from rugged coastlines and limestone cliffs to remote moorland, pastoral dales and settled coalfields. The county’s places provide settings for tales shaped by local imagination and remembered storytelling traditions.

Among the characters are the evil fairies of Weardale, a shape-changing witch from Easington, the Bishop Auckland boar and the Dun Cow associated with Durham City. Adam Bushnell retells these stories in an accessible style, while Nigel Clifton’s illustrations accompany the collection. Together, the tales present County Durham folklore through creatures, marvels and local legends rooted in the character of the county.
