Dorset Folk Tales for Children

Dorset Folk Tales for Children brings together 14 traditional West Country stories retold by folk singer, musician and actor Tim Laycock. Its cast includes demons, dragons, giants, mermaids and Jack-o’-lanterns, while the tales draw on Dorset’s rolling countryside, ancient sites and Jurassic Coast.

Stories include ‘The Old Man of the Sea’, in which a fisherman encounters a fish-man, alongside ‘The Wonderful Crocodile’, ‘Giant Grumble’ and ‘Granny Parsons and the Dorset Dumplings’. Several tales are rooted in identifiable places, including Burton Bradstock, Dorchester, Bincombe Bumps, Dewlish and Littlebredy. Zoe Barnish’s illustrations accompany this collection, which connects local landscapes with traditional storytelling for younger readers.
