Down Folk Tales

Steve Lally’s collection brings together stories linked to County Down, ranging from outlaw legends and ghost accounts to fairy traditions and local curiosities. Redmond O’Hanlon appears as a notorious rapparee whose reported career inspired tales of a headless ghost, while other chapters recount the Ghost Girl of Ballymullan, the Gillhall Ghost and Haddock’s Ghost.

The collection also includes the changeling of Glascar, the Lisburn Giant, Maggie’s Leap, St Donard and Auld Nick’s visit to an old woman in Downpatrick. Hilltown’s fairy tales and the story of a fairy tree sit alongside accounts of the Haunted Bridge, Black Dermod and explorer Francis Crozier, presenting County Down folklore through twenty-one illustrated pieces.
