Haunted Sunderland

Haunted Sunderland gathers more than 100 reported ghost stories from Sunderland and nearby settlements, including Cleadon, Boldon, Hylton and Rythorpe. Rupert Matthews covers local traditions and alleged encounters ranging from the Havelok Road poltergeist, linked to disturbances in the 1950s, to the account of Wicked Lady Peat.

Other cases include the Ryhope Poltergeist, the White Lady of Washington Hall, a glowing grave at Wingate and a spectral talking cat. The stories draw on both historical and contemporary accounts, presenting a varied record of hauntings associated with Wearside and its surrounding communities. More than 80 photographs accompany the text, adding visual context to the places and incidents described.
