Haunted Wearside

Haunted Wearside gathers more than 50 reported ghost encounters from Sunderland and the surrounding Wearside area. Darren W. Ritson combines eyewitness testimony with accounts of attempts to find evidence for ghostly activity, presenting local stories alongside historical and contemporary source material.

Among the cases are the ghostly nuns associated with Franklin Street, a headless horseman reported on Newcastle Road and phantoms said to haunt the Royal Infirmary. The book also preserves the atmosphere of these accounts through illustrations, giving its collection a strong sense of place. Together, the reports range from longstanding local traditions to more recent sightings, while leaving the question of what, if anything, lies behind them open to consideration.
