Mysterious Yorkshire

Mysterious Yorkshire gathers reports, legends and folklore from across the county, ranging from spectral creatures to unexplained animal sightings. The Barguest is said to patrol woods, fields and towns, while the 2006 Church Fenton Tiger prompted a modern search near the River Ouse. Yorkshire’s stories of dragons, giants and the Devil sit alongside traditions linking the county with King Arthur and Old King Cole.

Rupert Matthews also considers witchcraft and reputed magic, including Old Mother Shipton’s prophecies and the 19th-century activities of Wizard Wrightson. Accounts of haunted wells and springs, ghosts, fairies and other supernatural beings show how local beliefs have attached themselves to Yorkshire’s landscapes, communities and history.
