The Anthology of Scottish Folk Tales

The Anthology of Scottish Folk Tales gathers legends from across Scotland, bringing together stories shaped by regional customs, beliefs and dialects. Its selections include the Spaeman’s peculiar advice, a laird changed into a frog, and a fugitive sheltering in a dark cave. One tale recounts the stoor worm’s battle with Assipattle, while others draw on the distinctive traditions of Scotland’s varied communities.

The contributors are professional storytellers living and performing in Scotland, with each having authored a volume of county-based tales. Together, their work reflects the influence of different local traditions and the continuing importance of spoken storytelling. Donald Smith contributes the foreword, placing the collection within Scotland’s wider storytelling culture.
