West of Ireland Folk Tales for Children

West of Ireland Folk Tales for Children retells traditional stories rooted in the landscapes and beliefs of Ireland’s western counties. Among its tales are accounts of Knockma and its legendary inhabitants, a boy’s encounter with a pooka, and a soldier wounded in body and soul. The collection presents fairies, witches, spirits, skeletons, headless bodies and other fantastical beings as figures within folklore and storytelling tradition.

Rab Fulton’s versions are written for children aged around seven to eleven, balancing eerie subjects with adventure, humour and imaginative detail. Marina Wild’s illustrations accompany the stories, giving visual form to the creatures, settings and incidents that emerge from the region’s oral traditions and legendary past.
