The Bone Plot: Ghosts BBC (S3, E1) REVIEW 1

Review of The Bone Plot Ghosts BBC

We start series three with a bang. A historical documentary is being filmed at Button House, and we learn how Humphrey really lost his head. Humphrey Bone – his full name – is actually one of the most important people to have graced Button House. Shocker!

Humphrey is, in my opinion, one of the more underrated characters of the cast. He often plays subtle roles in the unfolding stories, serving as a constant supporting character. But this episode gives Humphrey the centre stage. As he moves through the retelling of his story, it is odd seeing him ‘whole’, so to speak, but it is endearing to see him trying to placate his young French wife, desperate for a happy marriage.

Meanwhile, loathsome Barclay has resurfaced. Noticing the cameras at the House, he decides he would like some air time. He crawls out from under his rock, wearing a suit and ready to be filmed, but… panic ensues. Could Barclay be about to have a heart attack? Alison and the ghosts panic. If he dies at Button House, they would be stuck with him for all eternity, making Button House a living hell.

I have never been a member of a book club, nor do I have any desire to join one, but I have often wondered what actually happens at a book club. Surely it isn’t just about sitting around and talking about a book? Is it? Well, not the book club that Humphrey’s wife holds, which is actually a cover for a secret society planning treason. A “book club” that soon has disastrous consequences for Humphrey.

Back at Button House, Thomas appoints himself as Alison’s vocal coach, preparing her to be part of the documentary instead of Barclay. I challenge you to try this tongue twister warm-up: “The Butler Burnt the Butter but the Bacon Bore the Brunt.” I think I might borrow that one, thanks, Thomas.

Back in Humphrey’s story, we see the documentary crew telling one version of events, where Humphrey dramatically throws himself at the mercy of the Queen’s guards, being beheaded on the spot. But the reality of the story is very different. In truth, Humphrey hides and is accidentally beheaded by the falling of two ornamental swords hanging above a fireplace.

Pat, Kitty, Mary, and Robin are telling jokes, trying to teach Captain and Fanny how to be funny. Mike has had a shirt printed for Alison to wear when she is on camera, excited about the promotional opportunity for Button House. Alison, not so much, as she becomes overwhelmed by guidance from the ghosts… and Mike.

The takeaways from this episode? There are two, actually. Number one: everyone has a different perspective on a story. Number two: make sure to check the positioning of words when you design a T-shirt. No one wants to be a “Butt Ho”.
