East Lothian Folk Tales for Children

East Lothian Folk Tales for Children gathers stories rooted in particular places across the county, linking local landscapes with folklore, legend and eerie happenings. Tim Porteus’s retellings feature witches and wizards, dragons, faeries, ghosts and selkies, alongside pirates, smugglers, giants and ogres.

The collection includes the whispered secrets of an ancient tree, the story of the Skeleton Boy in Hanging Rock Cave, and the strange transformation of an ordinary rat. Selected for children aged seven to eleven, these tales connect imagination with East Lothian’s landmarks and traditions. Morvern Graham’s illustrations accompany the stories, adding visual detail to this collection of local Scottish folklore.
