Carlow Folk Tales

Carlow Folk Tales gathers more than eighty traditional stories from rural County Carlow, collected and retold by local storytellers Aideen McBride and Jack Sheehan. The selection ranges across the county, presenting folklore shaped by local communities and oral tradition.

Alongside legends and traditional tales, the collection preserves the distinctive character of Carlow storytelling, where everyday lives can acquire a memorable, sometimes uncanny quality. Among the recorded material is the story of a man who kept an eel as a pet, illustrating the variety of anecdotes and narratives gathered here. Together, these accounts form an oral tour of County Carlow, linking its people and places through stories passed between generations.
