Black Dog Folklore

By Mark Norman

Black Dog Folklore examines the recurring figure of the spectral black dog in British tradition, treating reported encounters alongside the beliefs attached to them. Mark Norman considers Westcountry dog legends, protective animals, Black Shuck and barguest traditions, church grim lore, roads and bridges, dreams, landscapes and modern accounts.

The book’s second section provides a gazetteer of more than 700 sightings, local traditions and eyewitness reports from across Britain. These accounts include black dogs linked with particular roads, families, churchyards and landscapes, as well as stories in which the animal appears as an omen, guardian or threatening presence. The study places individual reports within wider patterns of folklore without presenting them as established supernatural fact.
