Aberdeenshire Folk Tales

Aberdeenshire Folk Tales gathers stories rooted in the county’s hills, glens, castles, rivers, coastline and city. Grace Banks and Sheena Blackhall include legends of the Maidenstone, Knock Castle, Kildrummy Castle, Drum Castle and the Curse of Forvie, alongside tales connected with smugglers, a highwayman and local landmarks.

The collection moves between human adventures, historical traditions and encounters with folklore figures. A kelpie appears among the forest and waterside stories, while other accounts feature a wizard laird, a giant with three golden hairs, a toad-frog and forces said to reach beyond the grave. Together, the tales present Aberdeenshire as a landscape where place, memory and storytelling remain closely bound.
