Ancient Legends Retold: The Legend of Pryderi

Fiona Collins retells the life of Pryderi, the only character to appear throughout all Four Branches of the Mabinogion. The Welsh legend follows him from childhood through kingship, conflict and loss, while connecting his story with Rhiannon, his mother, and Cigfa, his wife. Pryderi emerges as brave, loyal and occasionally foolhardy, caught within a world of enchanted transformations, dynastic struggles and perilous encounters.

The retelling draws together material often encountered as separate episodes, giving Pryderi’s story a continuous shape from beginning to end. An introduction places the tales within their medieval manuscript tradition, while notes on names and pronunciation, together with recommended versions of the Mabinogion, provide useful context for this Welsh mythological cycle.
