Cheshire Folk Tales

Cheshire Folk Tales gathers and retells stories rooted in the county’s landscape, traditions and oral culture. Johnny Gillett brings together tales of mythical heroes, demons, dragons, boggarts and sniddlebogs, linking them with Cheshire’s canals, forests, rolling hills and fertile plains.

Alongside the stories, the collection reflects local customs, eccentric traditions and a fast-disappearing dialect. The subjects range from legendary figures associated with Cheshire to the darker creatures said to trouble its communities. Twenty-five line drawings accompany the text, while Gillett’s experience as a professional storyteller informs these lively retellings of the county’s folk heritage.
