Lancashire Folk Tales

Lancashire Folk Tales gathers traditional stories tied to the county’s towns, landscapes and legends. Jennie Ruth Bailey and David England retell accounts ranging from the Phantom Voice at Southport and the Leprechauns of Liverpool to the Pendle Witches’ hanging at Lancaster and the tale of Miss Whiplash at Clitheroe.

Alongside these named stories are encounters with boggarts, dragons, villainous knights, venomous beasts and the Devil. The collection moves through Lancashire’s narrow valleys, medieval forests and treacherous sands, presenting a local mythology shaped by both place and storytelling tradition. Illustrations by Jo Lowes and Adelina Pintea add visual detail to these lively county tales.
