Dracul
Dracul reimagines the story behind Dracula through the childhood and early adulthood of Bram Stoker. In 1868, the 21-year-old Bram barricades himself inside a desolate tower, armed with crucifixes, holy water and a rifle while trying to survive the night. His record of events reaches back to his sickly childhood in Dublin, where he was cared for by Ellen Crone, a mysterious young woman linked to a series of strange deaths.
Bram’s sister Matilda helps detect a disturbing pattern in Ellen’s behaviour before leaving for Paris. Years later, Matilda returns with news that she has seen Ellen again, suggesting the danger they thought finished has begun anew. The novel combines Gothic suspense, vampire fiction and an imagined origin for Dracula.
