Forest Folk Tales for Children

Forest Folk Tales for Children gathers traditional stories linked to the woods and forests of England, Wales and Scotland. Its tales introduce hobs, faeries, dragons, monsters, giants, witches, kings and the Green Man, alongside stories associated with places including the New Forest, Sherwood Forest, the Forest of Dean and Thetford Forest.

Tom Phillips reshapes these traditions for younger readers, with Amanda Vigor providing the illustrations. The collection also includes a poem at the beginning of each chapter, followed by ‘Did you know?’ and ‘Why don’t you?’ boxes that encourage children to think about the stories and engage imaginatively with their local woodland. The result is a story-led introduction to British forest folklore, combining legendary beings, traditional narratives and the trees themselves.
