Haunted Chester gathers reported encounters with spirits, spectres and poltergeists from one of England’s oldest cities. David Brandon traces these stories through Chester’s streets, alehouses, cemeteries and ancient city walls, drawing on both historical and contemporary accounts.

Among the cases are ‘Sarah’, a figure said to throw people down the stairs when mocked, a troubling curse associated with the Great Eastern disaster of 1859, and the ghost who reportedly booked a room at The Coachhouse. The book also considers the locations behind the stories, presenting more than sixty photographs by local photographer Ed Brandon alongside accounts rooted in Chester’s buildings, history and long-standing traditions of haunting.
