About this book
Once Upon a Street brings Norfolk’s history and folklore to life through imaginative short stories for children, each rooted in the stories of a particular street or town. The settings range from an Edwardian circus adventure in Great Yarmouth and fairground animals in King’s Lynn to time-travelling mice in Wymondham.
Elsewhere, a medieval dragon appears in Norwich, an owl becomes associated with Holt, and a Tudor queen takes part in a street procession. A Georgian theatre supplies another historical backdrop, with a dancer at its centre. Inspired by material held at the Norfolk Heritage Centre and by research into Norfolk streets, these tales place love and friendship at the heart of their historical settings, with illustrations by John McKeever.
