Scottish Folk Tales of Love

Scottish Folk Tales of Love brings together 24 traditional stories shaped by love in its many forms, from devotion between partners to bonds between families, friends and communities. Tom Muir’s retellings move between Celtic myth and Scottish folklore, including tales of doomed or cursed love and romances foretold in dreams.

Selkies, fairies, witches, ghosts and the Devil all appear among these stories, where affection can bring comfort, danger or tragic consequences. The collection includes a Scottish Cinderella, a loyal brownie, a fair knight carried away by the Queen of the Fairies, and a chieftain’s son deceived into killing his true love. Hester Aspland’s illustrations accompany Muir’s retellings.
