Witchcraft Continued: Popular Magic in Modern Europe
Witchcraft Continued examines the persistence of witchcraft beliefs and popular magic in Europe after the decline of the formal witch trials. Edited essays cover England, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Finland, Transylvania and Northern Ireland, tracing accusations, healing practices, magical harm and changing attitudes across the 19th and 20th centuries.
The collection considers how witchcraft operated within everyday social life, including more than 300 Finnish narratives concerning sorcery, counter-magic and village tensions. Other chapters discuss witchcraft accusations in France, vernacular healing in Italy, a 19th-century English assault, and magical traditions among Hungarians in Transylvania. Historians, anthropologists and sociologists are brought together to assess both the evidence and the continuing relevance of popular belief.
