Mary Queen of Scots Death Mask

I arrived at Carberry Tower on Saturday, 2 January, for a weekend stay. My partner booked us in for a meal in the restaurant at around 7pm.

Having ordered our meal, I decided to pop outside for a cigarette at approximately 7.15pm. I went into the central courtyard and stood under the heater.

When switched on, it illuminates the smoking shelter with a red glow from either end, but doesn’t really light up the courtyard.

I’d say the courtyard is approximately four metres across.

A woman in white at Carberry Tower

Looking down towards my cigarette as I lit up, I became aware of a figure dressed in white opposite me, moving from left to right about 3.5 metres away.

She was a woman in her late 20s, wearing a long white lace dress and a white lace headdress. Her skin was pale but natural-looking.

I wasn’t looking directly at her at first, but over about four seconds I raised my gaze towards her face. She turned her head to face me.

As our eyes met, she stopped moving forward and disappeared as instantly as switching off a light. The figure had appeared as solid as a real person.

I was totally unaware of any ghost stories connected with Carberry Tower and did not know what Mary Queen of Scots looked like. It wasn’t until I later looked up ghost sightings and saw an image of Mary’s death mask that I believed it was the face I had seen.

She didn’t speak or make any sound. It was completely silent.

Strange activity in the Royal Suite

We were staying in the Royal Suite and that night the shutters in the bathroom, which I’d closed earlier, started banging.

I thought it was the wind and that perhaps a window was open, but I found the shutters locked shut and the window firmly closed.

The banging continued through the night.

It wasn’t until writing this that I thought much about it, but the next evening was much windier and yet the room was silent. My partner, Sandra Gillies, also witnessed the banging.
