Conwy Castle is one of Wales’s most spectacular medieval fortresses and is widely regarded as one of the most haunted places in North Wales

Looming above the River Conwy with its eight mighty towers and massive curtain walls, Conwy castle dominates the skyline of the walled town below.

It has witnessed sieges, rebellions and centuries of bloodshed – but its past lives on not just in stone, but in ghostly legends that still terrify visitors today.

History of Conwy Castle

Conwy Castle was built between 1283 and 1287 for King Edward I as part of his campaign to subdue the Welsh.

Designed by the master architect James of St George, the fortress formed a crucial link in Edward’s “iron ring” of castles, built to enforce English rule across North Wales.

Its location was no accident.

Built on a rocky outcrop at the mouth of the River Conwy, the castle commanded both land and sea routes.

Inside its formidable walls, Edward and his army could control the surrounding valley and keep a watchful eye on Wales’s restless population.

Over the centuries, the castle was besieged more than once.

During the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr in the early 1400s, Welsh forces fought to reclaim their land.

In the English Civil War, Conwy Castle again became a contested prize, held for the king until it finally surrendered to Parliamentarian forces.

Each battle left its mark in blood and fear.

Today, the fortress stands as one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, recognised as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and celebrated as the most beautiful castle in Wales.

Hauntings of Conwy Castle

Beneath its architectural grandeur lies a darker story.

According to legend, before Edward’s fortress rose above the river, a holy monastery once stood on the site.

Some believe its monks never left.

Visitors and locals alike have reported sightings of two ghostly hooded figures, robed in grey, drifting silently through the castle grounds.

They have been seen standing motionless along the turrets, appearing in shadowy corners of the walls, and even down on the quayside beside the river.

Descriptions are remarkably consistent.

The monks have no feet, their bodies hang as pale outlines, and their faces are obscured by dark hollows where their eyes should be.

The effect is said to be chilling – a presence so strong that dogs have refused to enter the castle, yanking their owners back to the gates in terror.

Local tradition holds that the monks are omens of disaster, appearing before tragedy strikes the town or valley.

Over time, they have become a central part of Conwy Castle’s ghost lore – silent watchers from a past steeped in both holiness and violence.

The story of the monks is not the only chilling tale associated with Conwy Castle.

Visitors often speak of a heavy, uneasy atmosphere inside the fortress.

Long echoing corridors, narrow staircases and shadowed chambers seem to play tricks on the senses.

According to ghost-hunting reports, people have heard whispers in the stone passageways when no one is there.

Others claim to have seen fleeting figures vanish into walls or felt sudden drops in temperature in otherwise sheltered corners of the towers.

For some, the castle’s turbulent history provides the perfect explanation.

Centuries of war, imprisonment and death leave their mark, creating the conditions for hauntings to endure.

Ghost hunters who have ventured inside report the same chilling sense of being watched, as though the walls themselves hold secrets too dark to share.

Paranormal Investigations at Conwy Castle

Given its reputation, Conwy Castle has long attracted the attention of paranormal investigators.

Teams have carried out vigils inside its chambers, hoping to record evidence of supernatural activity.

Some report unexplained noises and mysterious cold spots, while others describe the unnerving experience of shadowy figures lingering just beyond sight.

James Reeve, official guide for the walled town of Conwy and host of the popular Conwy Ghost Tour, has met many of these investigators first-hand.

James told Spooky Wales: “Part of what’s been interesting doing the ghost tours is I set off with one set of stories to tell, but inevitably people who come on the ghost tours then tell me other stories and have other experiences.

“I’ve had a number of mediums come on the tour… each of them were picking up different things. Some completely overlapped with the stories I was about to tell, which if I’m honest, I found quite unnerving. Others were totally new experiences.”

James also recalls occasions when investigators claimed to detect spirits tied to specific locations around the castle.

Their findings – whether recordings, sensations or psychic impressions – add to the castle’s already weighty reputation.

A History That Refuses to Die

Conwy Castle is more than an ancient ruin.

It is a fortress built on conquest, a place where medieval politics met rebellion and war.

Its walls, soaked with centuries of blood and conflict, seem to echo with voices from the past.

The ghostly monks, with their faceless stares and ominous appearances, remain the most enduring legend.

For some, they are simply folklore.

For others, they are evidence that history never really dies.

Whatever the truth, Conwy Castle offers visitors a unique blend of architecture, history and hauntings – a reminder that the past is never far from the present in one of Wales’s most atmospheric sites.
