The Black Swan in York is one of the pubs you should be visiting, a quieter haunted spot where the atmosphere builds over time, writes DAVID SAUNDERSON

The Black Swan does not make a show of its ghosts. It just sits there, as it has for centuries, letting people notice things in their own time.

Step inside and it feels different to a lot of York pubs. Yes, the rooms are uneven. The ceilings dip. The beams are thick and dark, not decorative but part of the building’s bones. But it feels like somewhere that has been used constantly, rather than restored or cleaned up for visitors.

On my visit, that was what stood out straight away. It doesn’t feel staged or polished. There are no skeletons on display, no photos from Most Haunted on the walls, none of the things you sometimes see in places that lean into their reputation. The Black Swan in York just gets on with being what it is.

It’s often described as one of the most haunted pubs in York, not because it overwhelms you, but because it lingers.

York is known as the City of Cats. The Swan York embraces that title, with a feline climbing up its frontage.

History of the Black Swan York

The building dates back to at least the 1500s, originally a house on Peasholme Green.

It belonged to the Bowes family, who were important figures in York. William Bowes was Sheriff and later Lord Mayor of the city. Sir Martin Bowes went on to become Lord Mayor of London and worked as a jeweller to Queen Elizabeth I.

Over time the house changed. Rooms were added, layouts shifted, and eventually it became a pub. In the 1930s, restoration work stripped back later additions and revealed the older structure underneath. Oak beams, brickwork and blocked-up windows were uncovered, leaving the building looking much as it does today.

Walking through it now, you can see those layers clearly. On my visit, I was struck by how the rooms don’t quite line up in the way you expect. It feels like parts have been joined together over time rather than designed as one space.

Why the Black Swan York feels haunted

The Black Swan has never really stopped being used.

People have lived here, worked here and gathered here for hundreds of years. During the Second World War it was a regular spot for Canadian airmen, who called it the Mucky Duck. Some of them never came back.

There is no single event you can point to and say that is the reason. It is more the accumulation. The building has been altered, opened up, closed off, and reused again and again.

Standing inside, you get a sense of that build-up. It doesn’t feel empty of its past. It feels like it has absorbed it.

Black Swan York ghost sightings and experiences

The Black Swan is usually described as having more than one presence.

The most talked about is a man seen on or near the staircase. He is often described as a Victorian figure, sometimes just standing there, sometimes moving, and then gone. It is not a one-off sighting. People report seeing him often enough that it feels like part of the building.

There are also reports of a woman near the fireplace, and what some believe is a child presence. These are not always clear, more like glimpses or impressions rather than full figures.

One of the stranger accounts involves disembodied legs going up the stairs. Not a full person, just movement where something should be. It sounds odd, but this kind of partial sighting comes up a lot in older buildings. (The opposite of the Roman soldiers in the Treasurer’s House in York, which don’t have legs at all!)

People have also reported seeing a black cat moving through the rooms, even when there is no animal there.

Alongside these are the smaller things. Cold spots. A feeling of being watched. Movement at the edge of your vision.

On my visit, nothing obvious happened, but I did find myself glancing towards the staircase more than once. It’s the kind of place that quietly draws your attention.

Ghost activity in the upstairs rooms

If there is a focus, it is upstairs.

There is a panelled room with dark wood walls that feels heavier than the rest of the pub. The light is different up there. It does not spread evenly, and the corners seem to hold onto shadow.

When I went upstairs, that shift was noticeable straight away. It was quieter, more enclosed, and you become more aware of the space around you.

This is where several sightings have taken place. People have reported figures moving across the room or appearing briefly near the staircase.

Even without seeing anything, it is the kind of room where you pause a bit longer than you expected to.

What it’s like to visit the Black Swan York

The atmosphere is what stays with you.

Downstairs, it feels like a proper pub. Worn wood, low beams, uneven floors. Nothing polished, nothing put on.

It’s hard not to compare it to places like the Golden Fleece. I love the Golden Fleece. It’s a brilliant pub, full of character, and it leans into its haunted reputation. But when it’s packed, it can be hard to move, and you’re very aware of the experience being part of the attraction.

The Black Swan feels different. It doesn’t try to sell the idea of being haunted. It just exists, and you pick up on it in your own time.

The Black Swan is a pub with loads of atmosphere, a true spooky pub to have a pint and a chat in.

On my visit, I was impressed by how intact it feels. Not preserved like a museum, but still very much itself. You can sit there with a drink and feel like you are in a place that has simply carried on.

It is also where people still come to talk about these things. The York Society of Hauntologists meets here, which feels right for a place like this.

It’s the kind of place where nothing obvious happens, but you leave feeling like something might have.
