Fire, murder and betrayal haunt The Punch Bowl in York, where ghost stories refuse to die, writes DAVID SAUNDERSON
Stonegate’s The Punch Bowl looks like a classic, welcoming pub, but it comes with a darker reputation.
Staff and visitors have long reported footsteps, voices, and figures moving through the rooms, tied to stories of murder, betrayal, and fire.
It is said there are at least three ghosts here. Each one has a story that ends badly. And none of them seem to have left.
(Please be aware there is another pub called The Punch Bowl in York, on Micklegate near the corner of Blossom Street – a great Wetherspoons full of wonderful beers, but don’t make the same mistake I made by visiting it thinking it was this one!)
The Punch Bowl York history and origins
The Punch Bowl has stood on this site for more than four centuries, with a licence dating back to 1761.
Originally a 17th-century coffee house, it became associated with the political grouping, The Whigs, who met here to drink punch, giving the pub its name. (Across the street, their rivals gathered elsewhere, favouring wine and port!)
The building you see today is not entirely original.
Fires have struck the site more than once, with much of the current structure dating from 1931.
Even so, it remains one of York’s oldest pubs, standing almost opposite Ye Olde Starre Inne.
There are also long-standing links to the pub being used as a brothel, particularly in the 19th century, something reflected in its ghost stories.
The Punch Bowl York ghost stories and hauntings
There are several reported spirits at The Punch Bowl, and most are linked to moments of violence, fear, or emotional distress.
- Isabella, the murdered woman: Isabella is said to have worked here when the pub was operating as a brothel. After rejecting a client, she was chased through the building and killed. Witnesses report hearing running footsteps and terrified screams, while some claim to see a woman fleeing down the stairs, as if still trying to escape.
- The Grey Lady: The Grey Lady is believed to be a woman who took her own life after discovering her lover had been unfaithful. She is said to wander the bar and corridors, with some reports describing her watching men closely, as if searching for signs of betrayal.
- The landlord who died in a fire: A former landlord is said to have been trapped in the cellar during a fire and died there. His ghost is reported to walk the route of the old cellar steps, even though the layout has since changed. A glowing orb has also been seen moving through the bar, often linked to his presence.
- General activity: Unexplained footsteps are often heard upstairs when no one is there. Voices and movement have also been reported in empty rooms.
There is a pattern to the hauntings here. Each one ends in fear, betrayal or being trapped. And the activity reported today seems to replay those moments.
Visiting The Punch Bowl York today
The Punch Bowl is still a busy Stonegate pub, with three main areas, a front bar, a middle space used for dining, and a quieter lounge.
Inside, it has that classic York feel. Dark wood panelling, low ceilings, and narrow connecting rooms. It feels cosy rather than oppressive, even with its reputation.
One detail stands out, the pub openly leans into its ghost stories. There is a sign at the entrance telling visitors about Isabella, the Grey Lady, and the landlord, turning the hauntings into part of the experience.
The Punch Bowl is the kind of place where you can sit with a drink, look around at the old beams and corners, and realise that the stories are not hidden away. They are part of the atmosphere.
And in a city like York, that usually means they have been around a long time.
