Lismore Heritage Centre in County Waterford unveils chilling secrets as paranormal investigators explore the haunted former courthouse and jail, writes ANN MASSEY McELROY

Step inside Lismore Heritage Centre in County Waterford and you’ll find yourself walking straight into the echoes of Ireland’s shadowy past. The building may now be a cultural and community hub, but its bones were built for judgment, justice and perhaps something that defies both.

Originally a 19th-century courthouse and jail, Lismore’s Heritage Centre recently welcomed its first-ever paranormal investigation with Irish Paranormal Investigations. From the moment the team walked through the door, the spirits let them know they were ready.

In Lismore you are standing on land shaped by 5th century monastic scholars, 8th century Viking raids, British rule and rebellion. Though parts of the courthouse were burned during the Irish War of Independence, it was swiftly rebuilt by 1924.

The original courtroom, holding cells, and judge’s chambers still retain their exterior architectural integrity and it appears, the emotional weight of those who passed through. The picturesque town of Lismore on Ireland’s Ancient East is a place where the veil between past and present seems thin and the people who once stood trial may never have truly left.

Strange Happenings in the Heritage Centre

Long before any investigation equipment was unpacked, the team at Lismore Heritage Centre already knew something was stirring within its walls. Over time they have experienced a string of spooky incidents that defy explanation.

Books and artwork mysteriously thrown in the gift shop (once the jail cells) and the apparition of a woman seen descending the main staircase. Staff often reported the unnerving sensation of being watched, especially on the first floor. One workman was so disturbed by a presence looming over him in the corridor, that he abandoned the building mid-job, leaving his tools behind.

During a Eurovision viewing in the auditorium, the team was startled when a disembodied woman’s voice cut through the room, so vividly and unmistakably that they fled. Another time, the apparition of a little girl was seen peeping from behind the stage curtain.

As ongoing renovations picked up pace, so too did the intensity of the activity, as if the spirits were being shaken from slumber. If you’ve ever visited, you might have felt it too – that prickle on the back of your neck, the sense of being observed.

When a Building Comes Alive

With the full support of Heritage Centre team members Sheena, Doireann, and Vanessa, Irish Paranormal Investigations entered the building for a full investigation.

Throughout the night, activity rippled through the building. REM pods lit up in seemingly random succession on the staircases and landings. Disembodied voices, whispered conversations and unplaceable sounds came and went.

Whatever the nature of energy lingering in Lismore Heritage Centre, one thing was clear – they were still very much present and paying attention.

The Spirits of the First Floor

The first floor and back staircase of Lismore Heritage Centre have long carried a reputation for unease. Staff, particularly when alone, often feel unsettled in this part of the building, watched, followed, never quite alone. It didn’t take long for the investigating team to understand why.

A disembodied voice was heard, only to repeat on the recording. Heavy footsteps walked across an empty room upstairs. Whispering conversation echoed through a deserted corridor.

Elsewhere, the Heritage team heard the unmistakable sound of a solid door opening and slamming shut. The building didn’t just hold a presence, but seemed to respond. As everyone listened closely, something was listening back.

The Courtroom Remembers

If there was one place where the energy shifted palpably, it was the old courtroom, now the auditorium. Here, surrounded by memories, the stage and historic echoes, the veil felt thinner.

Temperatures dropped by as much as 10 degrees in seconds. Names were spoken through the spirit box, divining rods swung determinedly and it was clear that the energies within that space knew exactly who was there.

All signs then pointed behind the stage curtain, to the area where a young girl has been seen by someone who has known this space since childhood. Now an adult, she stood behind the curtain with an ethereal presence wanting to be felt. She instantly felt jaw tension and a strange sensation in her throat, as if emotion was caught mid-sentence.

There was no fear, only something deeply felt. A bond. One that clearly runs deeper than one night can reveal.

A Commanding Presence

Beyond the stage lies the Judge’s Room, small, quiet and charged with authority. The atmosphere wasn’t hostile, but there was a weight to it. A presence that made itself known, not through fear, but command.

Motion lights activated, the spirit box continued to be a conduit to those wishing to be heard and the divining rods pointed on cue before pointing decisively to the door. It was time to go. The impression was subtle but strong, like a gavel striking the bench. The session was over and the Judge had spoken.

Where the Past is Always Present

The spirits of Lismore Heritage Centre are not only active, they are intelligent, emotional and incredibly aware. Some seem eager to tell their stories.

If you ever visit the Lismore Heritage Centre, look twice at the staircase, pause in the auditorium, be aware and listen. Because once you open a place like this to spirit communication, you might find the spirits are just as curious about you.

Thanks to the amazing Sheena, Doireann and Vanessa for opening their building and sharing their time and experiences so openly.

This building is a treasure trove of dark heritage and haunted history and we have only just begun to uncover its secrets. As Sheena herself says “This is the kind of place where the past is always present.”
