Every year, A Ghost Story for Christmas gives spooky fans something new to look forward to on the BBC’s festive schedules. This year is no exception, with Mark Gatiss turning to Charles Dickens and Martin Freeman and Jim Broadbent leading the cast of The Bride’s Chamber.

Written and directed by Gatiss, the new adaptation will air on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer over Christmas 2026.

An exact transmission date has not yet been announced. For ghost story fans, the annual drama has become a highlight of the BBC’s Christmas schedules.

Freeman plays Goodchild. Broadbent joins Adrian Scarborough, Joe Armstrong, India Fowler and Lewis Shepherd in the cast.

The production has already been filmed at Ingatestone Hall in Essex.

What is The Bride’s Chamber about?

The Bride’s Chamber is based on Charles Dickens’s lesser-known supernatural tale The Ghost in the Bride’s Chamber.

Set in 1858, the story begins at an unnamed inn where a lone traveller encounters a mysterious man dressed in black. The stranger tells him the disturbing story of a rejected suitor who schemes to marry a young woman for her fortune.

His murderous intentions lead to a supernatural reckoning.

The original tale formed part of The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices, written by Dickens with fellow Victorian novelist Wilkie Collins.

It is a much less familiar Dickens ghost story than A Christmas Carol or The Signalman, making it an intriguing choice for this year’s production.

Charles Dickens returns to A Ghost Story for Christmas

Although A Ghost Story for Christmas is most strongly associated with MR James, Charles Dickens already has an important place in the history of the series.

The BBC’s 1976 adaptation of The Signalman, starring Denholm Elliott, remains one of the best-loved entries in the strand.

Dickens’s story follows a lonely railway signalman who is repeatedly troubled by a mysterious figure apparently warning him of approaching disaster. Its bleak railway cutting, tunnel and growing sense of unavoidable tragedy helped make Lawrence Gordon Clark’s adaptation one of the great British television ghost stories.

Mark Gatiss has also spoken warmly about The Signalman, describing the 1976 production as a masterpiece.

The Bride’s Chamber therefore continues an older strand tradition: looking beyond MR James to other classic writers of supernatural fiction.

A Ghost Story for Christmas beyond MR James

The original BBC series became famous for its adaptations of MR James. Beginning with The Stalls of Barchester in 1971, it went on to produce classics including A Warning to the Curious, Lost Hearts, The Treasure of Abbot Thomas and The Ash Tree.

Spooky Isles writer Richard Markworth has argued that Gatiss deserves credit for keeping the Christmas ghost story tradition alive. In his look at Mark Gatiss and A Ghost Story for Christmas, he also traces the strand’s move beyond MR James.

In recent years Gatiss has increasingly looked beyond James for inspiration. Arthur Conan Doyle’s Lot No. 249 was adapted in 2023, followed by E. Nesbit’s Woman of Stone in 2024 and E.F. Benson’s The Room in the Tower in 2025.

Now Dickens joins that run with The Bride’s Chamber.

Dickens was one of the writers most responsible for popularising the Victorian tradition of the Christmas ghost story, while MR James later became perhaps its most celebrated master.

Martin Freeman returns to ghost stories

Martin Freeman is already familiar to British supernatural horror fans.

He starred as Mike Priddle in Ghost Stories (2018), Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman’s supernatural anthology film.

The film follows paranormal investigator Professor Phillip Goodman as he investigates three disturbing cases that appear to defy rational explanation. Freeman appears in the final story as a wealthy businessman whose apparently secure modern home becomes the setting for something deeply unsettling.

Freeman’s appearance in The Bride’s Chamber also reunites him with Mark Gatiss after their years together on Sherlock, where Freeman played Dr John Watson and Gatiss appeared as Mycroft Holmes.

Jim Broadbent’s spooky screen history

Jim Broadbent also has connections to horror, fantasy and the supernatural.

One of his earlier film appearances came in The Shout (1978), the strange British psychological horror starring Alan Bates, Susannah York and John Hurt.

Broadbent later became familiar to another generation as Professor Horace Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011).

He has even appeared in a Dickens Christmas story before, playing Prince Albert in Blackadder’s Christmas Carol (1988).

Where was The Bride’s Chamber filmed?

The Bride’s Chamber was filmed at Ingatestone Hall in Essex. The Tudor manor house provides an appropriately historic setting for a Victorian supernatural tale and gives this year’s A Ghost Story for Christmas a strong Essex connection.

Adorable Media produces the drama.

When is The Bride’s Chamber on BBC Two?

The BBC has confirmed that A Ghost Story for Christmas: The Bride’s Chamber will air on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer during Christmas 2026.

The exact date and time have not yet been announced. The strand traditionally appears around Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

Spooky Isles will update this article when the BBC confirms the transmission date, and again when The Bride’s Chamber is broadcast.
