Five horror characters performing on the FEAR Scream Park stage.

FEAR at Avon Valley, in Keynsham near Bristol, is my most visited Halloween attraction in the UK. Part of this is logistical: from Plymouth, it’s the closest serious scream park, even though getting there and back takes five hours.

There are smaller Halloween events closer to home, but nothing that offers the same scale of night out. On my fourth visit in five years, my main observation is that FEAR continues to improve.

This is remarkable for a scream park that, on the surface, changes so little, introducing a new maze only once every few years and building on existing storylines, characters and themes.

In last year’s review, I wrote about the difficulty of justifying that drive without more substantial changes. I’d still ideally want more than incremental improvements, yet each trip to FEAR has been more enjoyable than the one before.

Artwork and live entertainment

A good example of what FEAR does right is its work with South West illustrator Josh Beamish. Last year, Josh created concept art and promotional illustrations for Seeds of Evil.

The maze was a hit, although some of his scene-setting artwork was difficult to see clearly in the queue. This year, his work appears across much of the new merchandise, including T-shirts for each maze and the cups visitors take home.

During a year when other Halloween events are cutting corners with AI-generated posters and backgrounds, FEAR is investing in local talent and going all in with an illustrator whose style resonates with its audience.

The live entertainment continues to grow, with performances taking place between the mazes like clockwork. The Titans of Terror, FEAR’s most recognisable scare characters, dance onstage and terrorise visitors around the park, while dance routines and laser shows give me more to watch than I can comfortably fit around the mazes.

Curse of the Blood Moon was on another level this year: a fire show with wings of flame, incredible performances and serious talent on display. These performances are part of the core offering, beginning with the opening Scaremony that introduces the characters and sets the atmosphere for the night.

It’s also worth noting that my favourite moment of the night was completely unscripted. Walking through the set for the streets of Stidham Village, we realised that we were passing through 20 or so undead nuns, who all turned to stare at us and block our path.

Realising that we were trapped in the middle of their performance was seriously unsettling and we laughed about it all the way home.

Vita Nova and Seeds of Evil

FEAR’s five main mazes occupy two connected worlds. Seeds of Evil and Malefica belong to Stidham Village, while X4, The Core and Vita Nova form the New World Order trilogy in the Republic of England.

We made a beeline for Vita Nova as soon as the queues opened. Its Orwellian treatment programme splits visitors up and sends them down alternating paths, subjecting them to medical interventions designed to make them compliant citizens.

The bright lights, medical treatments and brainwashing remain memorable, but after several visits I’m beginning to feel that Vita Nova needs a refresh.

We visited on Thursday 29 October 2026 without Fast Track tickets and comfortably managed all five mazes, never queuing longer than 45 minutes. We did catch up with other groups during our first trips through Malefica and Seeds of Evil, although there was time to revisit both later and have very different experiences.

Seeds of Evil won ScareCON’s Best Set & Design award for its debut season, and this year it took that concept and improved on almost everything. There was more humour from the actors, more interaction and better punchline pay-offs, alongside props and animatronics rigged to frighten us or tell the story of villagers whose vegetable-growing experiments had gone horribly wrong.

More scarecrows and pumpkins prowled the fields, leaping out at unsuspecting visitors. We laughed and screamed in equal measure.

Seeds of Evil is up there with the best scare mazes in the country.

Lock N Load and The Autopsy

This year I tried Lock N Load for the first time, an extra-charge shooting experience linked to escaped experiments from X4. The performers crumple when you fire and tumble from props like enthusiastic stunt people.

It’s short, but was one of the highlights of our night and well worth the extra cost. Anybody who has tried the shooting experiences at Screamfest or Farmageddon will recognise the idea; Lock N Load does it very well.

New for 2026, The Autopsy continues the story of Evelyn Grace after The Exorcism, taking a small audience into a mortuary where investigators attempt to explain her death. There’s a lot of thought behind the performances, unsettling effects and sound design.

I’m not sure it tops The Exorcism for scares, because that production had a finishing set-piece that had to be seen to be believed. The Autopsy definitely rounded out our night, and it would be criminal to visit FEAR and miss it.

Like Lock N Load, it costs extra unless included in your ticket package.

Braving Malefica alone

For the first time, I also tried Brave It Alone. For £15, you can book a solo trip through one of the mazes at the end of the night.

Places are limited and booked inside the park. I chose Malefica: Into Darkness, the unholy church that this year sends visitors into the dark with a torch that flickers and goes out at the worst possible moments.

With a group, it was fun and invigorating. Alone, it was out of this world.

I haven’t had a thrill like that at a scare attraction since I was 13. All the cast could concentrate on me: telling their story, chasing me and jumping out when I was least prepared.

It felt like the VIP version of a scare maze, the ideal run with no queues and no other groups getting between you and the performers.

I don’t want to spoil Malefica, but something came out of the darkness that I hadn’t seen anywhere else in the park. A horrible, horrible creature followed me through most of the rooms, distracting me so effectively that I fell for the scares of the other actors.

It was absolutely incredible.

My teenage son chose X4 for his solo run and was sent in with a secret mission that turned the whole concept on its head. When we reunited, he was just as excited as I was about Malefica.

Some of the older mazes would benefit from new scenes or a more substantial shake-up, but Brave It Alone would have been worth the trip by itself. FEAR continues to be one of the best scream parks in the UK.

Even after four visits, I hadn’t expected to get that much out of a maze I already knew.

We paid for our own admission and all additional experiences.
