Guy N Smith Horror Author Interview AUDIO

Paul Adams, Guy N Smith and David Saunderson

Back in 2014, Spooky Isles’ David Saunderson and Paul Adams visited celebrated English horror writer Guy N Smith at his farm in Shropshire to discover what makes the horror master tick (or is that click, click, click?)

Guy N Smith (1939-2020) was a renowned horror writer known for his gripping and terrifying storytelling, including Night of the Crabs, Locusts, Doomflight and Werewolf by Moonlight.

With over 70 published books, his work spanned various subgenres of horror, from creatures of the deep to supernatural hauntings.

Back in 2014, Paul Adams, an avid admirer of Guy N Smith, invited me to visit his childhood hero at Smith’s home in Shropshire. We travelled for hours to meet the author in person.

During our journey, Paul passionately shared his deep appreciation for Smith’s books, recounting the first time he encountered his work in 1977. Smith’s novel, Night of the Crabs, left an indelible mark on Paul, inspiring him to become a writer himself. Smith’s writing style, characterized by fast-paced, action-packed horror with no frills, spoke to Paul, igniting his own passion for storytelling.

Finally, we arrived at Guy N Smith’s residence in Shropshire, and he graciously invited us into his home.

We discussed his latest release, Hangman’s Hotel, which harkened back to his first book, Werewolf of Moonlight, published in 1974.

Smith revealed that, despite changes in the publishing industry, he remained true to his writing style, favouring straightforward horror narratives over complex plotlines. He cherished the simplicity of a well-told, gripping story and avoided excessive descriptions that could tire the reader.

As we delved deeper into the interview, we discovered that Guy N Smith’s fascination with horror stemmed from his love for what he called “fun horror”.

His stories often featured nature pitted against humanity, with giant crabs, snakes and locusts wreaking havoc. He explained that he wrote with the readers in mind, delivering enjoyable, fast-paced tales that captured their imaginations.

The conversation took an intriguing turn as Paul brought up the topic of paranormal elements in Smith’s writing. Although Smith claimed that he had not drawn inspiration from personal experiences, he did mention some paranormal occurrences in his own home.

Objects mysteriously vanished and reappeared, leading Smith to acknowledge the presence of supernatural forces. However, he assured us that he had made peace with these incidents and no longer felt threatened. It seemed these experiences had influenced some of his recent works, infusing them with elements of the supernatural.

Reflecting on his extensive writing career, Guy N Smith expressed gratitude for the readers who had found enjoyment in his books. He shared heart-warming encounters with fans who remembered reading his works during their youth, emphasising that bringing pleasure to his audience was the true essence of his craft.

In conclusion, our visit with Guy N Smith provided a glimpse into the world of a legendary horror author. With his fast-paced, action-packed narratives and focus on fun horror, Smith had garnered a dedicated fan base that spanned decades. His unwavering commitment to storytelling, combined with his recent exploration of supernatural themes, ensured that his work continued to captivate readers and inspire aspiring writers. Guy N Smith’s contribution to the horror genre was truly remarkable, leaving an indelible mark on the Spooky Isles and beyond.

Is Chicksands Priory England’s Most Haunted House? VIDEO

Is Chicksands Priory England’s Most Haunted House? VIDEO 3

Author Damien O’Dell talks to Spooky Isles about his latest book, a ghostly history of Chicksands Priory, a top-secret UK Intelligence centre in Bedfordshire.

Chicksands Priory
Chicksands Priory in Bedfordshire

Due to its location in the “Golden Triangle” with Woburn Abbey and Bletchley Park (famous for its role in the Enigma Machine’s code-breaking), Chicksands has made a legendary contribution to intelligence gathering. O’Dell has extensive knowledge of Chicksands from his many years of service there as a guide. O’Dell investigates the truth and stories of the Priory’s numerous hauntings over the course of the prior 1,000 years, spurred on by his paranormal investigations and rigorous research.

Damien says: “When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 the Cold War ended. It was plain to see for the Clinton administration, that the time was right for the withdrawal from Europe of some of America’s tactical resources. These were scattered throughout the Continent.

“At the same time new communications technologies for relaying signals via communications satellites  became available and were inexpensive. Signals intercepted by human operators could be collected as effectively by operators in the U.S., at much lower cost.

“Teams of radio operators, analysts and telecoms specialists were seen as obsolete and comparatively expensive to maintain at Chicksands Priory.

“The writing was on the wall for RAF Chicksands as an American base. At the same time the Priory’s role was dwindling, to bi-weekly guided tours hosted by the Friends of Chicksands, who also organised occasional musical evenings. The Chapel was used for the happiest of occasions – the weddings of some young men and and women of the USAF.

“Inevitably the base would be closed. In 1993 and again in 1994 the 450th Intelligence Squadron was listed to be ‘inactivated’  – but it was reprieved. The drawdown on the defence budget was remorseless. The ‘Chixers’, as the Americans called themselves, would be returning home in 1995.

“Paranormal phenomena continued to be witnessed, both inside the Priory and outside, within its environs. The local press, sensing a good story, obtained permission to conduct their own ghost hunt. They would not be disappointed. They gained first-hand experience of unexplained events inside this haunted house. Inevitably the national press, The Sunday Times no less, began to take an interest.”

Alan Murdie, Chairman of the London-based Ghost Club, writes in the Foreword: “The positive enthusiasm for research and interest in recording events at this location shines throughout. Whatever view one may take on ghostly experiences, all those interested in this topic will surely be impressed by the amount of fascinating material shared in these pages concerning this unique location.”

Damien O’Dell, born in West Kensington, London, has been interested in the unexplained since childhood. He has authored a series of paranormal books including Ghostly Bedfordshire Reinvestigated, Paranormal Bedfordshire, Paranormal Cambridgeshire and Paranormal Hertfordshire. Remembering Fortean TV with Rev Lionel Fanthorpe VIDEO

Fortean TV with Rev Lionel Fanthorpe

Rev Lionel Fanthorpe talks to Spooky Isles’ about Fortean TV and his other paranormal adventures

Rev Lionel Fanthorpe embarked on a lifetime of paranormal exploration after reading H.G. Wells mysteries and experiencing a bizarre childhood encounter with his dog.

And it was that journey that saw Lionel host classic 1990s paranormal Channel 4 series, Fortean TV, which is being released on DVD for this first time this week.

Lionel, now 87 years old, has done many interesting things during his life, including working in various roles, including priest, dental technician, teacher and journalist.

He’s also been an avid paranormal investigator, something he became passionate about as a youngster.

The paranormal awakening of Rev Lionel Fanthorpe

“I was a little bit of a lad that didn’t like school,” Lionel said. “I was always trying to avoid lessons I found either boring or difficult or too complicated for me to understand.”

Young Lionel would sneak into the school library to avoid classes.

“While I was down there, I would pull a book out of the shelf and start having a read. And I found H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and other writers about the paranormal. Wells had done a lovely book of short stories called Tales of the Unexpected, which I think is a glorious title even now.

“And that’s where my interest started, because I only began wondering whether there were real mysteries in the outside world, not just fictional mysteries. And that got me investigating.”

It didn’t take long for Lionel to come face to face with the paranormal to find something to ponder.

“We had a little dog, very small, about the size of a Pekingese … and his name was Prince. And he had his food bowl and his drinking bowl just outside the back door so he could go out into the garden.

“Whenever I came past, he’d be up on his hind legs and wanting to be patted, which I was always very happy to do because he’s a lovely little boy.

“And then on more than one occasion, not just me, but other members of the family, saw him greeting somebody we couldn’t see.

“It was as if he had seen some sort of psychic entity, and he was up on his hind legs, as if there was a person there.

“Whatever that psychic entity was, it must have been a kind and friendly person. Imagine, a highly sensitive dog would be very happy to be greeted by a friendly ghost.

“I’d look at that and say to my mum and my grandmother, who lived with us – and I said, Mum, what do you think Prince is saying? And she said we don’t know, but he seems to be seeing and communicating with somebody that we can’t. And that’s one of the the very earliest experiences.”

Lionel talks about his other adventures in the paranormal including making Fortean TV in our video on Spooky Isles.
